WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:00.160 --> 00:00:06.640 Aloha and thank you Marc for your  introduction and for this opportunity to   00:00:06.640 --> 00:00:13.840 participate in this symposium along with all  of the esteem presenters who have presented   00:00:14.480 --> 00:00:24.800 the day before and are in today's symposium. I would like to add to this conversation this   00:00:25.360 --> 00:00:31.920 thought of Kanaloa from a Hawaiian cultural  perspective and in that because I think Kanaloa   00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:41.600 has many different connotations for the Native  Hawaiians so we know Kanaloa as the god of the sea   00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:52.480 but Kanaloa has many other kinolao and that  can allow is that Kanaloa is manifest in many   00:00:52.480 --> 00:01:02.240 different forms and some of those kinds of forms  have to do with other concepts like Palaoa 00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:12.160 or the the Kohola the the great whale that is  described as Kanaloa and Kanaloa also takes   00:01:12.160 --> 00:01:24.400 other forms of sea creatures like the dolphin and  the monk seal and also Kanaloa is used to describe   00:01:24.960 --> 00:01:31.680 the he'e or the octopus and in fact even one  of our islands in Hawaii is given the name   00:01:31.680 --> 00:01:38.960 Kanaloa to represent not only that specific  island but also its connection to Kanaloa   00:01:39.600 --> 00:01:48.880 the god and to Kanaloa the Kohola or the Palaoa  or the whale so the kinolau is a representation   00:01:48.880 --> 00:01:57.360 that comes from the deepest realm of the sea  the Kanaloa is in the realm of places of which   00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:06.720 we the people aren't necessarily able to be a part  of so this connection to the Kanaloa helps us all   00:02:06.720 --> 00:02:13.520 to have a deeper understanding of the Kanaloa and  that relationship helps us to become familiar with   00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:21.600 those places that we are not necessarily a part of  physically but we are part of in that connection   00:02:21.600 --> 00:02:28.640 and that spiritual connection with Kanaloa and  then the Kanaloa also in Hawaiian culture   00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:35.840 is related to the navigator and and  the voyaging because it is said that   00:02:37.600 --> 00:02:47.600 Kanaloa served to be part of the guidance of  our seafarers in the areas and into the realm   00:02:47.600 --> 00:02:55.440 of the great ocean so we also refer to Kanaloa in  that term as the one who guides us over the sea   00:02:55.440 --> 00:03:02.160 because of his relationship and the god being the  god of the sea and then lastly we look at Kanaloa   00:03:02.160 --> 00:03:10.960 as a family member or someone who belongs within  the realm of the aumakua or serves to be for us   00:03:12.320 --> 00:03:20.400 side of a guardian so these are the different  kinds of thoughts of Kanaloa that I think are   00:03:20.400 --> 00:03:29.600 very important for us to to consider when we're  having discussions about the Palaoa the Kanaloa   00:03:29.600 --> 00:03:38.240 the Kohola or the great whale so so with that I'd  like to begin with this presentation of Kanaloa. 00:03:42.480 --> 00:03:52.880 So first our ancient Hawaiian story of creation  is the story of connection so the gods from sky   00:03:52.880 --> 00:04:00.640 father to earth mother and the honua to all  things living creatures that dwell within the   00:04:00.640 --> 00:04:09.360 sea the land in the skies and the Native Hawaiians and the place we call home so our kuleana and responsibility   00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:17.040 for our care of all things that precede us so  here the great whale that dwells in the deepest   00:04:17.040 --> 00:04:27.840 expansive realm of the sea is related to the  sandalwood of the mountainous realm of the land. 00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:37.920 So for the Hawaiian people in our culture, oli oli 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:46.640 this is a a form of communication so we  look at the oli oli as the chanter   00:04:47.280 --> 00:04:56.720 so someone who conveys conversations through this  form of seeing is almost like songs and in those   00:04:56.720 --> 00:05:07.040 songs are perhaps songs and stories of genealogy  and the connection of all things that are created   00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:15.840 that begin in the deep realm of the sea and so  for us the Kanaloa is also represented in olioli. 00:05:19.760 --> 00:05:26.480 And then when we think about Palaoa as is  mentioned in the kumulipo, we look at Palaoa not only   00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:34.400 as the whale but it is also about authority in  Hawaiian culture the Palaoa was independent it was   00:05:34.400 --> 00:05:41.200 symbolic of authority it gave a person a status  of being a chief and perhaps one that could   00:05:41.200 --> 00:05:51.840 speak on behalf of the people with authority  so Palaoa is just that concept of authority.   00:05:55.200 --> 00:06:02.800 And in our observations of the Palaoa and we  look at the whales as they have frequented our   00:06:03.440 --> 00:06:13.680 our oceans we are reminded about 'ohana and in  'ohana we know 'ohana to be family and love and   00:06:14.720 --> 00:06:20.880 in that representation you see that  family is about nurturing and caring   00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:28.080 and then in that nurturing we are hoping  to impart within the family unit, especially the keiki   00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:38.880 all of what we hope to embody in them for their  continuation in this journey that they spend on honua  00:06:40.400 --> 00:06:44.080 within the depths of the  ocean and so we embrace them   00:06:44.960 --> 00:06:52.400 and we hope that we have given them all that we  can impart and then we let them grow and so 'ohana   00:06:52.400 --> 00:07:01.200 is about caring is about nurturing is about  embracing and to teach and to support in hopes that we will all continue. And so we look at the Kanaloa in terms of 'ohana. 00:07:01.200 --> 00:07:03.200 And then when we hear "ha", the breath 00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:25.920 you know that makes Kanaloa makes, we're reminded that breath is  really for us an important symbol ha a symbol of   00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:36.160 life and that without this breath we have no life  and so Kanaloa reminds us and brings to us   00:07:37.440 --> 00:07:44.080 the importance of Ha and breath and  then we continue to be a part of this place 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:55.200 and then lastly I think one of the things  that Kanaloa helped us to understand is the   00:07:55.200 --> 00:08:04.240 concept of mana and for us mana is not necessarily  tangible but it is about this guardian power this   00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:11.040 incredible and miraculous power that  is expressed in the great Kanaloa and then feel the spirit of Kanaloa, the god, the Palaoa, the Kohola, and 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:39.840 we understand our connection to mana the spirit 00:08:57.600 --> 00:09:07.840 and so we honor Kanaloa and its  connection and relationship to the people 00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:20.720 E mao let us all continue to  move forward and continue aloha
